The late Dr. Setiawati was not only known as a dedicated pediatrician, academic, and researcher, but also as one of the key figures behind the founding and development of Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine, a scientific journal that has played a vital role in fostering a culture of research and scientific publication within Indonesian hospitals.
Born in Semarang on February 27, 1967, she pursued her medical education at the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, graduating in 1991. After completing her specialty training, she continued her service at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital in Semarang as a medical staff member in the Department of Pediatrics starting in 2001. Throughout her career, she was also entrusted with various strategic responsibilities, including serving as Head of the Education and Training Division at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital from 2011 to 2015, Chair of the Health Technology Assessment Committee from 2015 to 2017, and holding various roles in the coordination of medical education and research ethics. Among her many contributions, one of the late dr. Mexi’s most significant academic legacies was her role in pioneering and founding Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2012. The launch of this journal marked a major milestone for Dr. Kariadi General Hospital in Semarang in establishing a platform for scientific publication focused on the advancement of clinical medicine and evidence-based healthcare.
In its early days, Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine emerged as a visionary step toward strengthening the role of hospitals—not only as institutions of care and education, but also as centers for the development and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine became a pioneer in hospital-based scientific journal publishing in Indonesia, an achievement of significant importance in the history of scientific publishing within the hospital setting.
As Editor-in-Chief, the late dr. Mexi played a fundamental role in laying the foundation for the journal’s management from its very inception. Amid the various challenges of developing a scientific journal, she oversaw the editorial process, fostered a commitment to publication quality, and encouraged clinicians and academics to document their research findings and clinical experiences in the form of scientifically sound articles.
In its early years, Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine was published in print twice a year, in May and November. From those humble beginnings, the journal continued to grow in line with developments in scientific publication management and the demand for higher publishing standards.
The late dr. Mexi served as Editor-in-Chief from 2012 to 2018. After completing her term, she did not abandon the journal she had founded. From 2019 onward, she continued to contribute as a member of the editorial board until the end of her life. The continuity of this dedication demonstrates that Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine was not merely a part of her career journey but also a part of the academic commitment she upheld throughout her life.
This dedication has been one of the key foundations in Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine’s journey toward becoming an increasingly thriving scientific journal that has gained national recognition. From a journal that was initially managed using a conventional publishing system, Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine has transformed into an electronic scientific journal, expanding the reach of scientific dissemination, strengthening editorial governance, and improving the quality and continuity of its publications. This long journey led Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine to achieve SINTA 3 national accreditation, an accomplishment that reflects the improvement in the quality of its management and scientific publications.
Beyond her work with Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine, the late dr. Mexi contributed to the world of scientific publishing through her role as a Contributing Editor for the journal Paediatrica Indonesiana from 2008 to 2013 and as a member of its Editorial Board since 2017. These roles demonstrate her commitment to advancing scientific communication and improving the quality of medical research publications, particularly in the field of pediatric health.
To the extended family of Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine, the late dr. Mexi left a legacy that extends far beyond her official position and the duration of her service. This legacy is embodied in a continuously evolving scientific journal, an increasingly robust academic culture, and a commitment to transforming research findings and clinical experience into knowledge that benefits the broader community.
Her passing on June 1, 2025, is a great loss to the world of medicine and scientific publishing, particularly for the extended family of Dr. Kariadi General Hospital and Medica Hospitalia: Journal of Clinical Medicine. However, the values of dedication and academic vision she instilled will live on through every issue of the journal published, every scientific paper released, and every generation of clinicians and researchers inspired to continue their work.
